Remembering

We find ourselves once more in a season of remembrance, as we move from All Saints' Day to Remembrance Sunday.  But scripture is filled with the instruction to remember.  In particular, we are exhorted to remember what God has done, to remember His faithfulness, to remember His goodness in the midst of challenges and to remember that we are part of a much bigger story.  A story of redemption and salvation and love.

And I love that on the pages of scripture, we discover the stories of ordinary people, who were learning how to live faithfully in all kinds of situations.  People who remind us of us.  I think of Hagar, discovering that God could see her, in her hiding place.  I think of Ruth, gleaning in the fields for her mother-in-law and her.  I think of Hannah, crying out to God in the temple.  I think of Elizabeth, rejoicing in the promise of a child.  I think of Jacob, dreaming of a ladder.  I think of David, shepherding in the hillside.  I think of Gideon, stuck in a wine press.  I think of Thomas, doubting.

People with hopes, dreams and plans.  People with baggage and family feuds and egos and flaws and moments of anger or stupidity or frailty.  People with short memories and yet people who, time and again, delight in discovering the presence of God in their lives.

Who is your favourite biblical character?  What story most resonates with you?

I also love the story of Christians down through the centuries.  Yes, those that have become well known because of their exploits, but also, those who are known only to a few, who were faithful in a quiet and enduring way.  Those who have encouraged us in our own faith.  Those who showed us something of what it is to become more like Jesus every day.  Those whose faces shone with a light that has only one source.

Who do you think of in your own life?  Who do you give thanks for?  If they are still alive, perhaps you could tell them.

And finally, who is it in your life that you are sharing your faith with?  Who would gain from hearing your own story of how God is at work in your life?  Whose faith is being encouraged by your faithfulness?
