Eco Poppies for Remembrance Day

Aberdeen Hillside Parish Church’s Sunday School students have found a unique way to commemorate Remembrance Day while championing environmental values.

Over the past few months, they’ve been crafting poppies from the bases of plastic bottles - giving new life to discarded materials in a moving tribute to those who served.

This project is more than a simple craft -  it’s a statement that aligns deeply with Hillside’s commitment to environmental action as part of Eco-Congregation Scotland.

Eco-Congregation Scotland is a movement of Scottish church congregations, of all denominations and none, committed to addressing environmental issues through their life and mission.

The organisation was founded in 2001 and became a registered charity in 2010. It encourages congregations to address climate issues and reduce their environmental footprint through community-driven projects.

The poppy-making initiative at Aberdeen Hillside Church illustrates how local congregations can reimagine traditional practices through the lens of sustainability, caring for God’s creation and honouring the sacrifices of past generations.

If you're passing Aberdeen Hillside Parish Church - 1-3 Hilton Dr, AB24 4NQ - take a moment to look at the poppies decorating the church garden. This will be a moment appreciating beautiful connection built between remembrance, community and care for creation.
